In the new case, the police had imposed sections related to “assaulting and outraging” the modesty of a woman police officer. Mevani, however, has alleged a conspiracy against him by the BJP and the RSS.

Guwahati: A local court in Assam on Friday granted bail to Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in connection with a case related to assault of a woman police officer. Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police from Gujarat earlier on charges of his alleged inappropriate tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was granted bail by an Assam court. Moments after the bail order, he was re-arrested by the state police in the assault case.
In the new case, the police had imposed sections related to “assaulting and outraging” the modesty of a woman police officer. Mevani, however, has alleged a conspiracy against him by the BJP and the RSS. He had claimed that his image is being tarnished with such allegations. Mevani alleged that earlier Rohith Vemula, Chandrasekhar Azad and now he is being framed.
A police team from Assam’s Barpeta had reached Gujarat to arrest the MLA. He was also charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to voluntarily causing hurt and stopping a government officer from doing his or her work.
Last week, the Dalit leader was arrested by the Assam Police from a circuit house in Palanpur in Gujarat over his now-deleted tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mevani, who was first taken to Ahmedabad, was flown to Assam the next morning.
Mevani’s arrest came after BJP MLA from Assam’s Kokrajhar, Arup Kumar Dey, filed a complaint. “Kokrajhar police arrested Congress Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from Palanpur Circuit House last night,” Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar told media persons.
