In the 40-member House, Congress managed to win 11 seats while Maharashtrawadi Gomantak won two seats. Meanwhile, AAP managed to bag two seats while the TMC could not open its account.
New Delhi: Barely managing to win with a wafer-thin margin of 666 votes, Goa Chief Minister and BJP candidate from the Sanquelim seat managed to steer the saffron party to victory. BJP managed to win 20 seats and with support from three Independents, the party is all set to return to power.
Apart from BJP and Congress, this election season, Goa saw several parties jumping into the fray, including Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Aam Aadmi Party. While initially the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC had managed to break away leaders, mainly from Congress, later, they left the party after accusing it of diving Goans on the basis of religion and caste.
In the 40-member House, Congress managed to win 11 seats while Maharashtrawadi Gomantak won two seats. Meanwhile, AAP managed to bag two seats while the TMC could not open its account.
In terms of vote share, till now, BJP has 33.31% votes, Congress has 23.46% and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak has 7.6% votes.
Congratulating Sawant, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Grateful to the people of Goa for reposing their faith in the BJP. BJP under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling the aspirations of our sisters & brothers of Goa. Congratulations to @DrPramodPSawant, @ShetSadanand & our karyakartas.”
After the victory, Sawant took to Twitter to thank the voters of Goa while accolades kept showering on him. Here’s his post:
All the 40 seats of Goa had gone to polls in a single-phase on February 14. Majority of the exit polls had predicted an equal number of seats for both BJP and Congress. For BJP candidate and sitting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant it was a prestigious battle this time as other political parties had also claimed their stakes. In Goa, this was the first assembly polls after the death of the state’s all-time famous Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
