Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia left for London late Tuesday night aboard a special air ambulance for urgent medical treatment, according to her advisor. Zia, who has served as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister three times, is battling severe health issues, including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and kidney problems.

Accompanied by key leaders of her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), she departed from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, marking a pivotal moment amid growing political uncertainty in the country.

Political Instability Grips Bangladesh

Bangladesh is currently grappling with heightened political instability. The country’s two most prominent political figures, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, continue to dominate the nation’s political narrative. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Awami League, has reportedly sought refuge in India following student-led protests, further fueling speculation about the nation’s political future.

With general elections just months away, the political landscape remains uncertain, as Zia’s departure adds another layer of complexity.

Legal and Political Developments

Under the tenure of Sheikh Hasina, Khaleda Zia faced significant legal challenges, including convictions in two corruption cases resulting in a 17-year prison sentence. Zia’s supporters have consistently argued that the charges were politically motivated.

However, since Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed leadership of the interim government, Zia has seen some legal relief. She was acquitted in one corruption case, while a hearing in the second case was held on Tuesday. The interim government is reportedly considering holding elections later this year or early next year.

Qatar’s Emir Steps In

Zia’s journey to London became possible after Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani sent a special air ambulance for her on Monday. Thousands of her supporters gathered outside her residence in Dhaka’s upscale Gulshan area to bid farewell, causing a massive three-hour delay in her 10-kilometer journey to the airport.

The emotional farewell, broadcast live on television, underscored the deep political and public sentiment surrounding her departure.

Future of Bangladeshi Politics

Khaleda Zia’s departure for medical treatment, coupled with Sheikh Hasina’s absence, reflects the fragile political environment in Bangladesh. As the interim government prepares for the upcoming elections, the roles of these two key figures will likely shape the nation’s immediate future.

With the nation watching closely, the next few months will be crucial for determining Bangladesh’s political direction and stability.
