New York City experienced a mild earthquake on Friday, registering a magnitude of 4.8, with its epicenter located in neighboring New Jersey, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The earthquake led residents in Brooklyn to feel the tremors as buildings shook, causing cupboard doors and fixtures to rattle, according to AFP.
At the United Nations headquarters in New York, a Security Council meeting discussing the situation in Gaza was momentarily interrupted by the quake. Janti Soeripto, a representative from Save the Children, remarked, “Is that an earthquake?” during her speech.
Social media users from Philadelphia to New York and eastward along Long Island reported feeling the earthquake.
Amidst the tremors, the iconic Empire State Building reassured the public on its official social media account, stating, “I AM FINE.”
