On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh in the Delhi excise policy case. This decision came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed the top court that it had “no objection” to his bail.
The apex court ordered the release of Sanjay Singh on bail “during pendency of proceedings”, with terms and conditions to be determined by the trial court.
However, the bench, consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and PB Varale, emphasized that this concession should not be cited as precedent. The court also affirmed the right of Sanjay Singh to continue his political activities.
AAP leader Somnath Bharti hailed Singh’s bail, asserting that the federal agency had been “exposed”. Similarly, Delhi minister Atishi expressed her approval with the phrase “Satyamev Jayate”.
Notably, a few days back, the ED revealed that during questioning, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had implicated AAP ministers Atishi and Saurabh in relation to the excise policy case accused, Vijay Nair.
Sanjay Singh was arrested in October 2023, marking the third instance of an AAP leader being detained in connection with the case.
The ED alleged that Sanjay Singh played a significant role in the purported scam and received illicit funds. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the arrests, attributing them to political motivations ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Prior to Singh, AAP’s Manish Sisodia was arrested in the “liquorgate” scandal, further intensifying political tensions.
