In a significant development in Syria’s ongoing civil war, opposition rebels have captured Daraa, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. This marks the fourth city to fall to the insurgents in recent days, underlining the rapid escalation of the conflict.

Why the Fall of Daraa Matters

Daraa, a strategic city bordering Jordan, holds immense symbolic and tactical importance. With a population of approximately 1 million, it has been a focal point of anti-Assad sentiment since the civil war began over a decade ago. Its loss underscores the increasing vulnerability of Assad’s regime.

The city’s fall could further isolate Damascus, the capital, as insurgents push to seize control of Homs—a pivotal city linking the capital to Assad’s coastal strongholds in Latakia and Tartus.

Syria Crisis and International Reactions

Reports indicate that the Assad regime has reached out to nations such as the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq for urgent military assistance. According to the Wall Street Journal, some Arab officials have even suggested that Assad consider leaving Syria as rebel forces gain ground.

Meanwhile, Iran-backed Hezbollah has reportedly deployed limited “supervising forces” to Syria to support Assad’s defense of Homs, a city of strategic importance due to its location and oil refinery. Jordan has reacted by closing its border with Syria and urging its citizens to evacuate. Russia has issued similar advisories to its nationals.

Rebel Offensive Gathers Momentum

The rebel coalition, led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched a surprise offensive on November 27. In the days since, they have seized several key cities, including Aleppo, Hama, and Deir Ezzor, while rapidly advancing toward Homs.

HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Jawlani reiterated the group’s objective to overthrow the Assad government. Alongside HTS, Turkish-backed Syrian militias under the Syrian National Army umbrella have played a critical role in the offensive.

The conflict has displaced an estimated 370,000 people, with the United Nations warning that this number could rise to 1.5 million if hostilities continue.

Global Diplomacy in Overdrive

The escalating conflict has prompted international stakeholders to engage in urgent diplomacy. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed Syria’s situation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, emphasizing the need for a political solution.

Turkey, a long-time supporter of opposition forces, has been pivotal in shaping rebel advances. The US has also expressed concern over the situation, with White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre confirming that Washington is closely monitoring developments.

India’s Advisory to Nationals in Syria

Amid the turmoil, India has issued a strong advisory to its citizens, asking them to avoid all travel to Syria. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged Indian nationals currently in Syria to leave at the earliest using available commercial flights. Those unable to leave have been advised to remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus, exercise caution, and restrict movement to essential needs.

The MEA has provided an emergency helpline at +963 993385973 (also available on WhatsApp) and an email address at [email protected].

The Broader Context

Assad’s regime, which regained control over most of Syria with support from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, is now under unprecedented pressure. With Russia focused on the Ukraine war and Iran dealing with regional conflicts, the Assad government faces a significant challenge in retaining power.

As the rebels advance and international powers weigh their next steps, Syria’s fate hangs in the balance. The fall of additional strategic cities like Homs could decisively tip the scales in favor of the opposition.
