The Government of Bangladesh issued a clarification on Tuesday regarding the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Sanatan Jagaran Manch and head of Pundarik Dham in Chittagong. The statement emphasized that the seer was arrested on “specific charges” and criticized what it described as a “misconstrued” interpretation of the arrest by certain groups.
Chinmoy Krishna Das is a former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
Bangladesh’s Response to the Arrest Controversy
In its statement, the Bangladeshi government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of all citizens, particularly minority communities. “It is with utter dismay and deep sense of hurt that the Government of Bangladesh notes that the arrest of Sri Chinmoy Krishna Das has been misconstrued,” read the statement from the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The government further asserted its determination to eliminate the “culture of impunity” for human rights violations and highlighted its goal of treating religious majorities and minorities equally.
India’s Reaction to the Arrest
Earlier in the day, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed “deep concern” over Chinmoy Krishna Das’s arrest and the denial of bail. India also urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and other minority communities in the country.

Bangladesh took issue with India’s remarks, stating that they were “unfounded” and misrepresented the situation. “Such statements stand contrary to the spirit of friendship and understanding between the two neighbouring countries,” said the Bangladeshi government.
The statement also stressed that Bangladesh’s judiciary operates independently and that the matter was being handled through proper legal channels.
Broader Implications for Bilateral Relations
The arrest and subsequent diplomatic exchange have cast a spotlight on the broader issue of minority rights in Bangladesh and regional sensitivities between the two neighbors. While Bangladesh insists on its commitment to minority protection, India’s concerns underscore the importance of safeguarding communal harmony and bilateral trust.
