New Delhi: With reports of more than 3,400 positive and 20,700 asymptomatic cases, China Friday clocked a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases. Majority of the cases are being reported from Sanghai which is reeling under a severe spurt in the number of cases these days.

Nearly 26 million people of Sanghai are facing hardships as the authorities have imposed a fortnight-long lockdown to contain the spread of the virus. The situation has led to growing discontent among the locals over lack of food and medical supplies and even the official Chinese media has started highlighting the public discontent. Elderly population living in the city are the worst hit as they are grappling to survive such a crucial time. For the authorities, it is a very difficult task to tackle the intensive public anger flooding the internet and other platforms.

According to the National Health Commission (NHC), there were 3,472 confirmed cases while 20,782 asymptomatic cases in the country on Thursday. Shanghai, China’s economic city, alone had reported 3,200 confirmed locally-transmitted cases and 19,872 local asymptomatic carriers on Thursday.

Amid a surge in the number of Covid cases, the city has reportedly been conducting tests on a massive scale by building temporary hospitals, including inside stadiums and swimming pool complexes to treat both positive and asymptomatic cases. On Wednesday, China reported 3,020 new confirmed and 26,391 asymptomatic Covid infections.
