West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “I sincerely thank the electors of the Asansol Parliamentary Constituency and the Ballygunge Assembly Constituency for giving decisive mandate to AITC party candidates.”

Kolkata: The counting of votes for the two bypolls held in West Bengal’s Asansol (Lok Sabha seat) and Kolkata’s Ballygunge (Assembly seat) concluded and announced both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidates — Shatrughan Sinha (Asansol) and Babul Supriyo (Assembly) — victorious.
In the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, Sinha won with 6.56,358 votes while BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul bagged 3,53,149 votes. A distant third, Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Partha Mukherjee has managed to get 90,412 votes, according to the Election Commission of India’s website. In terms of the vote share, TMC got 56.62% votes, followed by 30.46% by the BJP and 7.8% by the CPIM.
Taking to Twitter, Sinha thanked the electorate and said, “My most sincere thanks to the wonderful people of Asansol for their massive expression of support to me. I am overwhelmed and also humbled by the love and affection showered on me by the lovely people of Asansol, Bengal…..”
In the Ballygunge Assembly seat, Supriyo, a former Union minister who left BJP and joined the TMC, bagged 50,996 votes against Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Saira Shah Halim, who got 30,940 votes. BJP’s Keya Ghosh ended a distant third with just 13,174 votes. In terms of the vote share, TMC garnered 49.69% votes, CPIM got 30.06% votes and BJP got 12.83%.
In a tweet after TMC’s victory in Ballygunge and Asansol, Supriyo took to Twitter and wrote, “Wish to see the faces of those jealous BJP ‘Netas’ who never acknowledged my hard work for a place I love-Asansol & mocked me by saying, “Even a Matchstick standing for @BJP4India wud win in Asansol•Love you Asansol for serving them a Slap in a platter #RevengeIsAPureEmotion“
