New Delhi: Clad in basanti (yellow) turbans and dupattas, supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab reached Khatar Kalan to witness the swearing-in of the new Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann. Khatar Kalan is the ancestral village of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, a figure important for Aam Aadmi Party ideology.

While other party MLAs were present on the occasion, the star of the show, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was also present in the event. The dais, erected near the Bhagat Singh memorial, was all draped in yellow.

Moments after he took oath, Mann was congratulated by his party supremo Arvind Kejriwal and also Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kejriwal took to Twitter and wrote, “I am sure that under your leadership, prosperity will return to Punjab, there will be a lot of progress and people’s problems will be solved.”

Meanwhile, assuring support, Modi wrote, “Congratulations to Shri @BhagwantMann Ji on taking oath as Punjab CM. Will work together for the growth of Punjab and welfare of the state’s people.”

In a landslide victory for the Aam Aadmi Party in the more or less bipolar Punjab election, the party had managed to bag 92 of the 117 Assembly seats.

In terms of vote share, AAP managed to bag around 42.01% votes, Congress has 22.98% and BJP has 6.6%. Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann won from the Dhuri seat with a margin of 58,206 votes against Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy.

The AAP managed to crush almost all Congress bastions, an example of which was seen in the defeat of the former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi, who fought from two constituencies — Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur — and in both the seats he faced defeat in the hands of AAP candidates. In Chamkaur Sahib, Channi lost to AAP’s Charanjit Singh and won 7,942 votes while in Bhadaur, he lost to AAP’s Labh Singh Ugoke by 37,558 votes.
