Kolkata: The police have managed to detain the main accused in the Baguihati abduction and double murder case in Kolkata. The police said the accused was attempting to flee the state when he was held.
On August 22, two Class X students of Kolkata — Atanu Dey and Abhishek Naskar — had gone missing. Later, it was found that they were strangled in a moving car on August 22 and their bodies were dumped in a canal along the Basanti Highway near the city. While the families questioned the delay in finding the boys, the bodies were identified on Tuesday this week.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police said, “Satyendra Chowdhury, the main accused, has been picked up by our detective department from near Howrah station complex Friday morning.”
The officer added that Chowdhury was trying to escape to some other state and was buying a train ticket when the police tracked him down on the basis of an online transaction. They added that the accused had taken money from his relative before buying the ticket.
As of now, the police have got to know that one of the accused had lent Rs 50,000 to Atanu and although he was the main target, they killed Abhishek too in order to remove evidence.
The group had allegedly kidnapped the two class X students to extort the Rs 50,000 from their parents to buy a motorcycle. However, the police are also looking at other angles too. According to the police, the accused and the deceased had visited a motorcycle showroom before the two were murdered.
While the parents had received ransom messages, no contact could be established with the kidnappers, said the police, adding they moved with caution to avoid any untoward incident. The police also revealed that they had not presumed that the boys had died until one of the arrested accused confessed to the murder.
On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had lambasted the Kolkata Police for not being proactive in investigating the double murder case. The case is now be probed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
