The raging wildfires in Los Angeles County have drawn grim comparisons to catastrophic events, with Sheriff Robert Luna describing the devastation as resembling the aftermath of an atomic bomb. “It looks as though an atomic bomb dropped in these areas,” Luna said on Thursday.
A new wildfire erupted Thursday evening in the West Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, rapidly engulfing over 900 acres. At least 10 fatalities have been reported so far.
Firefighters are battling multiple wildfires, including the Pacific Palisades fire, which has burned over 19,000 acres, and the Altadena fire, which has consumed 13,000 acres. Together, these fires have displaced tens of thousands and destroyed thousands of structures.
Governor Gavin Newsom has deployed California’s National Guard to assist in managing the crisis. “We’re throwing everything at our disposal – including our National Guard service members – to protect communities in the days to come,” Newsom said, issuing a stern warning against looting in evacuation zones.
Pacific Palisades and Altadena are among the worst-affected regions, with multi-million-dollar homes reduced to ashes. Celebrities including Paris Hilton, Anthony Hopkins, and Billy Crystal are among those impacted. Nearly 180,000 residents remain under evacuation orders.

President Joe Biden has pledged federal resources to aid California. “This is the most widespread, devastating fire in California’s history,” Biden stated during a White House briefing.
President-elect Donald Trump criticized Governor Newsom on his Truth Social platform, accusing him of mismanagement and dubbing him “Gavin Newscum.” Trump’s claims included allegations of water mismanagement and insufficient fire prevention efforts. President Biden urged against politicizing the disaster.
Amid President-elect Trump’s campaign to incorporate Canada as the 51st state, outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered assistance. “Neighbours helping neighbors,” Trudeau wrote on X, sharing footage of Canadian firefighters aiding Los Angeles.
Shelters have been overwhelmed with donations from local residents, prompting officials to redirect supplies to other areas. The Sunset Fire in Hollywood Hills forced thousands to evacuate before containment allowed brief returns.
Social media platforms have seen an influx of unverified claims, including allegations that firefighting resources were diverted to Ukraine and accusations of understaffing due to diversity policies.
Experts attribute the intensity of the fires to two decades of drought followed by two unusually wet years, resulting in abundant dry vegetation. Southern California’s lack of heavy rainfall over the past eight months has further exacerbated conditions. Meteorologists warn that strong winds and dry weather will likely persist, keeping the threat level critical.
The wildfires continue to pose a severe threat to Southern California, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as efforts to contain the blazes intensify.
