New Delhi: At least 18 people including a top cleric were killed while nearly two dozen were severely injured in a massive explosion in Afghanistan on Friday. According to the reports, the blast took place during the Friday prayer at Gazargah mosque in Herat city. The mosque is one of the biggest mosques of western Afghanistan where scores of people had gathered to offer Friday prayer.
Confirming a huge blast at the mosque, officials of the governor of Herat province said that 18 people including Imam have been killed while 23 others have been injured.

The cleric Mujib Ur Rahman Ansari, who was killed in the blast, had come into the light when he had called for those who commit ‘the smallest act’ against the government to be beheaded.

Earlier on August 17, at least 20 people were killed while nearly 40 people had sustained in a blast in Kabul. The explosion had taken place at a mosque. Among the killed persons, many were worshipers who were inside the mosque when the incident had occurred. Explosion was reported in the Kheirkhane district of Kabul during the evening hours. The injured persons were taken to the hospital for further treatment.
