New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved two crucial corridors as a part of the Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV project. These new lines are expected to significantly enhance the Metro connectivity within the national capital, addressing the burgeoning transportation needs of Delhi’s residents.
Details of the new Metro corridors
The approved corridors are the Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor spanning 12.37 km and the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor covering 8.38 km. These additions will extend the reach of the Delhi Metro, facilitating easier and quicker commutes for thousands of passengers daily.
Project cost and funding
The total project cost for these two corridors stands at Rs 8,399 crore. The funding for this ambitious project will be sourced by the Government of India, the Government of Delhi and international funding agencies. This financial allocation underscores the commitment of both national and international stakeholders towards bolstering Delhi’s public transportation infrastructure.
Connectivity and interchange stations
The Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor will seamlessly integrate with existing Metro lines, including the Red, Yellow, Airport Line, Magenta, Violet and Blue Lines. Meanwhile, the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor will provide vital connectivity to the Silver, Magenta, Pin, and Violet Lines. With the construction of eight new interchange stations at strategic locations such as Inderlok, Nabi Kari, and Lajpat Nagar, the overall interconnectivity of the Delhi Metro network is set to witness a significant improvement.
Impact on commuters
These new corridors are poised to bring about a transformative change in the commuting experience for millions of Delhiites. Notably, the Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor will enhance connectivity to the Bahadurgarh region of Haryana, opening up new avenues for commuters in this area to access central and east Delhi with ease.
Timeline and future prospects
Construction of these corridors is expected to commence soon, with the completion slated for March 2026, in stages. Once operational, these corridors will add 20.76 km to the Delhi Metro network, further solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing Metro networks globally. Presently, the Delhi Metro operates across a network of 391 km and 286 stations, catering to the diverse transportation needs of the national capital.
