The Sudan army on Tuesday announced its successful takeover of the state broadcast headquarters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a significant advancement against its paramilitary rival in nearly 11 months of conflict.
Situated in Omdurman, a city adjacent to Khartoum in Sudan across the River Nile and integral to Sudan’s capital, the broadcast facility has been a focal point of heavy fighting, particularly around military installations, bridges, and supply routes.
Despite the United Nations Security Council’s call for a ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid during Ramadan, battles persist unabated.
While the RSF welcomed the ceasefire proposal, a high-ranking army general rebuffed it, underscoring the military’s recent gains in Omdurman after enduring defensive struggles for much of the conflict, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
By securing the state broadcast building, the Sudan army extends its influence across the northern sector of “old Omdurman,” while the RSF maintains control over southern and western precincts of the city.
Witness accounts suggest the army, relying on aerial assets and heavy artillery to offset the RSF’s infantry strength, has deployed drones to recapture lost territory in Omdurman.
The RSF, thus far, has not issued a response to the army’s latest advance. The RSF originally seized the state broadcast building during the outbreak of hostilities in mid-April 2023, utilizing it alongside other public facilities for military operations.
Meanwhile, national television and radio broadcasts have emanated from Port Sudan, where army-affiliated officials have operated since the RSF’s early occupation of significant portions of the capital at the onset of the conflict.
