Google has decided to limit its Gemini AI chatbot from providing answers to election-related questions in countries where elections are scheduled to take place this year.
The decision to restrict election-related queries was announced by Google’s India team on the company’s website. This move comes after Google initially outlined its plans to limit such queries in a blog post last December.
This restriction aims to prevent users from accessing information about candidates, political parties, and other aspects of politics.
Similar restrictions were also announced for the European parliamentary elections in February. While Google’s recent announcement specifically focuses on India’s upcoming election, it has been reported that these changes will be implemented globally.
This decision comes amidst a series of crucial elections scheduled to take place in countries like the US, India, South Africa, and the UK. There is growing concern about the impact of AI-generated disinformation on global elections, with technologies like robocalls, deepfakes, and chatbot-generated propaganda being used to influence public opinion.
In its statement, Google announced its intention to restrict the types of election-related queries that Gemini will respond to.
This move reflects the ongoing challenges faced by governments and regulators in addressing the threats posed by AI advancements to the democratic process. Additionally, it underscores the pressure on tech companies to prevent the malicious use of AI tools.
