The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially submitted a Letter of Intent to the Future Host Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This critical step marks India’s intent to bring the prestigious international event to its soil, moving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s longstanding vision closer to reality.
India’s Vision for the 2036 Olympics
According to sources, Prime Minister Modi envisions the Olympic Games as a transformative opportunity that could accelerate economic growth, social progress, and youth empowerment throughout the country. He has openly expressed India’s enthusiasm for hosting the Olympics on multiple occasions, most notably during the Independence Day celebration when he encouraged former Olympic athletes to provide input on hosting the Games.
“India is preparing to host the 2036 Olympics,” Modi stated, emphasizing the need for insights from experienced athletes to ensure that preparations are comprehensive. He urged these athletes to share their observations, saying, “We want to document this and share it with the government so that we don’t miss out on any small details in the preparation for 2036.”
Broad National Support for Olympic Hosting Aspirations
The IOC President, Thomas Bach, has acknowledged India’s potential, expressing that there is a “strong case” for the nation to host the Olympics. Last year, during the 141st IOC session held in Mumbai, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to the Olympic movement and underscored that India’s population of 1.4 billion is behind this dream. “We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to organize the Olympics on Indian soil in 2036. This is the age-old dream and aspiration of 140 crore Indians,” Modi remarked.
India Among Leading Contenders for 2036 Games
India is among ten countries that have shown initial interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, including Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Poland, Egypt, and South Korea. Ahmedabad is the proposed host city, potentially positioning India as a serious contender. The IOC began discussions with interested nations in November 2022, initiating the preliminary stages of the bidding process.
The Road to Becoming a Host Nation
The IOC’s Future Host Commission will evaluate all bids through a meticulous selection process. Each candidate country will be assessed on its readiness to host the Games and its capacity to meet the infrastructure, economic, and social requirements necessary for such a large-scale event.
Securing the 2036 Olympics would align with India’s ambition of becoming a sports powerhouse and could catalyze new investment, job creation, and international recognition for India’s sports programs.
With formal intent expressed and national support confirmed, India’s Olympic dream stands closer to realization, signaling a momentous chapter in the country’s sporting history.
