13 killed, 30 injured as bus catches fire after crash in Nashik, CM Eknath Shinde visits spot

Accident happened after the private bus hit a tanker in Nashik

Nashik: At least 12 persons were killed while 30 were injured in a bus accident in Maharashtra’s Nashik on Saturday morning. According to the report, fire engulfed the bus after hitting a trailer truck transporting diesel on the Nashik-Aurangabad highway.

According to the police, the majority of those killed were bus passengers as they were sleeping during the trip. The injured persons were taken to the hospital for further treatment. Police have also registered a case and have started investigating the exact reason behind the incident.  

According to the eyewitnesses, the incident took place at around 5.15 am. A huge ball of fire engulfed the bus as the fire officials tried to douse the flames. Police and fire tenders reached the spot after the eyewitnesses made a PCR call.

Condoling the death of passengers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Anguished by the bus tragedy in Nashik. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this mishap. May the injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected.”

He announced that an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each of the deceased due to the bus fire in Nashik. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the accident site and announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of those who died in the accident. “13 people lost their lives in an unfortunate bus accident at Nandur Naka on Aurangabad road while the injured are undergoing treatment. Taking immediate notice of this incident, administrative officers visited the accident site in Nashik and took a detailed review of the accident,” Shinde tweeted.

He, in another tweet, said, “After that, he went to the Nashik District Hospital and inquired earnestly about the citizens who were injured in this accident. He also explained that they will be treated at government expense and if necessary, they will be admitted to a private hospital and treated.”

“Taking serious note of this incident, the government has announced to give assistance of Rs. 5 lakh each to the relatives of the citizens who died. It has also been clarified that the injured will be treated free of charge,” he further said.

“Speaking on this occasion, it was clarified that we will try to find out the blind spots on the highway and try to remove them so that such accidents do not happen again and we will also check the vehicles carrying more passengers than the capacity and take preventive action against them,” the CM added.
