Donald Trump has declared his intention to impose a 100% tariff on cars manufactured in Mexico by Chinese companies, doubling the previous levy proposed for automobiles produced south of the US border.
During a rally speech in Dayton, Ohio, Trump directly addressed Chinese President Xi Jinping, conveying his threat of imposing tariffs.

Trump said, “Those large-scale car manufacturing facilities you are establishing in Mexico right now, with the expectation of not hiring Americans and intending to sell cars to us, will face consequences.” He added, “We will impose a 100% tariff on every car that crosses the border.”

Last month, Republican Senator Josh Hawley introduced legislation aimed at increasing tariffs on Chinese vehicle imports, citing concerns about the potential impact on US car companies’ competitiveness.
Hawley emphasized the need for President Joe Biden to safeguard US auto workers from the perceived threat posed by China.
In November, a bipartisan group of lawmakers urged US Trade Representative Katherine Tai to raise tariffs on Chinese vehicles, citing the need to prepare for the influx of Chinese vehicles exported through other trading partners like Mexico, as Chinese automakers strategically expand operations beyond China.
