Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, recently addressed concerns regarding his use of ketamine to treat depression. In an interview with journalist Don Lemon, Musk disclosed that he occasionally employs ketamine to alleviate negative mental states, describing it as beneficial for shifting out of depressive moods.
According to a report in CNN, the use of ketamine has helped Elon Musk lead the company.
Acknowledging the demands of his work schedule, Elon Musk mentioned using ketamine in small doses once every other week, under the guidance of a licensed physician. He emphasized the importance of mental acuity for his intensive work regime, typically comprising 16-hour days.
“There are times when I have sort of a… negative chemical state in my brain, like depression I guess, or depression that’s not linked to any negative news, and ketamine is helpful for getting one out of the negative frame of mind,” he told Lemon.
While clarifying his sobriety during work hours, Elon Musk didn’t specify whether he remained sober specifically from ketamine when working late at night. However, he asserted that his drug usage wouldn’t affect his ability to fulfill government contracts or investor relations, emphasizing the importance of delivering results for investors.
Reports suggest that Musk has been associated with the use of various drugs, including LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms, particularly at private gatherings worldwide. Linda Johnson Rice, a former Tesla director, reportedly opted not to seek re-election due to concerns over Musk’s behaviour and drug use.
Responding to these concerns, Musk’s attorney asserted that he undergoes regular drug testing at SpaceX and has never failed. Nonetheless, Musk’s past consumption of marijuana on the Joe Rogan Show in 2018 sparked controversy, leading to random drug testing of SpaceX personnel and scrutiny over his behaviour’s impact on company operations.
Given corporate regulations and federal contracts’ stipulations, any illegal drug usage by Elon Musk could potentially violate regulations at both SpaceX and Tesla, casting doubt on his leadership roles in these publicly listed companies. The boards of such companies are responsible for overseeing management on behalf of shareholders, making Musk’s drug usage a matter of considerable concern.
