President-elect Donald Trump reignited the debate surrounding immigration and crime following a deadly car-ramming incident in New Orleans that left at least 15 people dead and 35 others injured during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Trump placed blame on Democrats, accusing them of ignoring his warnings about criminal migration into the U.S.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump referenced his previous statements on criminal immigration, asserting, “When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true.” He further commented on the high crime rate, calling it unprecedented, and expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department.”
The tragic incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday (local time) in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter on Bourbon Street. Crowds had gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve with open-air concerts, a countdown to the New Year, and special restaurant deals. The celebrations were part of the annual festivities, which also attracted college football fans in town for the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The Sugar Bowl, which features a match between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame, draws fans from across the country, making it a significant event in the city.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation, labeled the attack as “an act of terrorism” in a post on X. The agency confirmed that the suspect was killed after engaging with local law enforcement officers during the incident.
President Joe Biden also issued a statement expressing his condolences to the victims and their families. “My heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday,” Biden said. “There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.”
