Russian missiles and drones carried out a devastating attack on a major electricity plant near Kyiv, as well as targeting power facilities across multiple regions of Ukraine on Thursday, according to reports. This aggressive move intensifies pressure on Ukraine’s already strained energy infrastructure, particularly as Kyiv faces shortages in air defenses.
The targeted assault marks a significant escalation more than two years after Russia’s full-scale invasion, with the Trypilska coal-powered thermal power plant near the capital being completely destroyed, according to a senior official at the facility’s operating company who spoke to Reuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin justified the strikes, citing recent Ukrainian attacks on energy targets within Russia. Social media footage depicted a fierce fire engulfing the expansive Soviet-era facility, with smoke billowing from the site, a location that Reuters verified as the Trypilska station.
In response to the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy decried the violence as “terrorism,” stressing the urgent need for air defense and other forms of support rather than prolonged discussions.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in an address to a divided Congress, urged Americans to overcome their internal uncertainties, referencing the conflict in Ukraine. His plea for continued US global leadership comes amidst congressional deadlock over approving additional military aid to Ukraine, exacerbated by pressure from hard-right Republicans aligned with former President Donald Trump.
Amidst the ongoing conflict, a Ukrainian government analysis revealed that Russian advances in Ukraine are largely facilitated by the mass deployment of “drop-and-forget” guided bombs containing foreign components, with up to 500 bombs being fired weekly. These bombs, equipped with “UMPC” guiding systems, pose a significant threat to Ukrainian forces on the frontline.
Regarding the escalating tensions around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the chief of the UN nuclear watchdog urged an immediate halt to drone attacks, warning that they could initiate a perilous new phase of the war. Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of targeting the plant since its seizure by Russia weeks after the invasion, prompting calls for an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to address the issue.
In response to diplomatic efforts, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that any negotiations on Ukraine excluding Russia would be futile. Despite Russia’s refusal to participate in an upcoming Swiss-hosted peace conference in June, the Swiss government remains committed to facilitating dialogue aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine.
