Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has urged India to support Kyiv, highlighting that India’s historical ties with Russia are rooted in a Soviet legacy that is fading away, as per the Financial Times report on Friday.
Kuleba’s visit to New Delhi aims to advance Ukraine’s vision for peace and strengthen bilateral relations with India.
Despite India’s traditional economic and defense partnership with Moscow and its reluctance to condemn Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Kuleba emphasized the mutual benefits of expanding trade and technology cooperation between India and Ukraine. He also invited Indian companies to participate in Ukraine’s postwar reconstruction efforts.
Kuleba expressed Ukraine’s interest in revitalizing trade with India, particularly in agricultural exports like sunflower oil, and increasing imports of Indian products, including heavy machinery.
Ukraine is pursuing a diplomatic initiative to convene a summit of global leaders without Russian involvement to advance its peace plan, which includes the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. However, Russia has dismissed this initiative.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, India has positioned itself as an emerging global influencer capable of facilitating dialogue between Western nations and Russia amid the conflict in Ukraine.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the crisis has deeply strained Russia’s relations with the West, paralleling the tensions of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
Amid Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine has sought F-16 fighter jets for several months, with pledges from countries like Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands to donate the aircraft and provide training for Ukrainian pilots.
Addressing the West’s promise to send F-16s to Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed their potential impact on the battlefield, stating that such aircraft would not alter the situation in Ukraine.
Putin accused the United States of exacerbating tensions by supporting Ukraine financially, militarily, and through intelligence assistance, leading to what he described as one of the worst periods in U.S.-Russia relations.
