The tragic incident involving the shooting of Sachin Sahoo, a 42-year-old Indian-origin man, by San Antonio police in the US has raised questions and concerns. Sahoo, who was suspected in connection with an aggravated assault case, was fatally shot by Officer Tyler Turner after allegedly striking two officers with his vehicle during an attempt to apprehend him.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers were initially dispatched to a residence in Cheviot Heights following a report of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Upon arrival, they discovered a 51-year-old woman who had been deliberately struck by a vehicle. The suspect, identified as Sahoo, had fled the scene, leaving the victim critically injured and requiring urgent medical attention.
Later in the evening, when neighbours alerted police of Sahoo’s return to the area, officers attempted to approach and arrest him. In the course of this encounter, Sahoo reportedly struck two officers with his vehicle.
In response, Officer Turner shot at him, resulting in Sahoo’s death at the scene. One of the injured officers was transported to a hospital for treatment, while the other received medical attention at the scene.
Police Chief Bill McManus provided additional details, explaining that Sahoo had previously run over the woman, who was his roommate, with his vehicle, leaving her in critical condition undergoing multiple surgeries.
Authorities had issued a felony arrest warrant for Sahoo, prompting the officers to visit his known location to effectuate the arrest. When confronted by officers, Sahoo attempted to flee, ultimately colliding with the officers’ vehicles and causing injury before being shot.
In light of the incident, questions have been raised regarding Sahoo’s mental health. His ex-wife, Leah Goldstein, revealed that Sahoo had struggled with bipolar disorder and exhibited symptoms of schizophrenia for a decade. Goldstein described him as a caring father and provider for their family, emphasizing the challenges Sahoo faced due to his mental health condition.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sahoo’s death remains ongoing, with police indicating a review of bodycam footage to ascertain further details. This incident underscores the complex intersection of mental health issues, law enforcement responses, and the tragic outcomes that can result in such confrontations.
