Carlo Acutis, a UK-born teenager who died from leukemia in 2006, is poised to become the Catholic Church’s first “millennial saint.” Born in 1991 in London, Acutis was a computer prodigy who used his skills to develop websites promoting the Church’s teachings online, earning him the nickname “God’s influencer.”
After his death in Italy, where he lived with his parents, Acutis’s body was placed in a tomb and displayed along with his belongings.
The miracles and the Pope’s affirmations
The path to his sainthood began after a seven-year-old Brazilian boy reportedly recovered from a rare pancreatic disease after touching one of Acutis’s t-shirts while a priest prayed to him. This recovery was declared miraculous following assessment and approval by the Pope.
In Catholicism, sainthood requires the attribution of two miracles, both of which must be verified and approved by the Pope. On Thursday, Pope Francis approved a second miracle attributed to Acutis, paving the way for his canonisation. This second miracle involved a university student in Florence who suffered a critical brain bleed following a bicycle accident.
Her family claimed that after her mother prayed at Acutis’s tomb, the student was taken off the ventilator, and within ten days, scans revealed her brain injury had vanished.
Who is Carlo Acutis
Acutis is notable as the only person born in the 1990s to be canonised. The last person canonised by Pope Francis was born in 1926.
Acutis demonstrated profound religious devotion from a young age. His mother recounted to local media that he would ask to visit churches at just three years old to donate his pocket money to the poor.
Beyond his faith, Acutis taught himself to code, creating websites for Catholic organisations, including a significant site documenting global miracles. This website has since been translated into multiple languages, extending his influence further.
The canonisation of Carlo Acutis marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church, highlighting the intersection of modern technology and ancient faith in the journey of sainthood.
