In a thrilling encounter on Thursday, June 13, Bangladesh secured a remarkable victory over the Netherlands, enhancing their prospects in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage. Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan emerged as the hero, delivering an unbeaten fifty and an economical spell to guide Bangladesh to a crucial 25-run triumph while defending a total of 159 at Kingstown’s Arnos Vale Ground.
This triumph not only bolstered Bangladesh’s chances but also dashed Sri Lanka’s hopes of advancing to the Super 8 round. With this win, Bangladesh solidified their hold on the second position with four points from three matches, while the Netherlands retained the third spot with two points in three games within Group D.
Najmul Shanto’s squad now leads the race for Super 8 qualification, boasting two victories in three matches, ahead of both the Netherlands and Nepal. Their sole defeat in the group stage occurred against South Africa, where they narrowly missed chasing a target of 114 runs.
Batting first after losing the toss, Bangladesh faced early setbacks with the quick dismissals of Najmul Shanto and Litton Das by Aryan Dutt. However, they regained control during the middle overs through a resilient partnership between Shakib and Tanzid Hasan.
Shakib’s impressive unbeaten 64 off 46 balls, accompanied by Tanzid’s vital 35 runs, propelled Bangladesh towards a competitive total. Despite efforts from Aryan Dutt and Paul van Meekeren, who claimed two wickets each, Bangladesh managed to reach a challenging score.
In response, the Netherlands commenced their chase with a promising 22-run partnership between openers Michael Levitt and Max O’Dowd. Nevertheless, they faltered during the powerplay, losing both openers. Subsequent contributions from Vikramjit Singh and Sybrand Engelbrecht kept their hopes alive momentarily, but the tide turned with Engelbrecht’s dismissal.

Rishad Hossain’s impactful spell, clinching three wickets for 33 runs, coupled with Taskin Ahmed’s two crucial dismissals, restricted the Netherlands to 134/8 in 20 overs. Shakib’s stellar performance earned him the Player of the Match award for his pivotal fifty and economical bowling.
