A Spanish tourist, who reportedly endured a harrowing experience of gang rape while on a bike tour with her husband in Jharkhand, has taken to YouTube to narrate the ordeal she faced.
In the nearly one-hour-long video, the Spanish couple addressed the various narratives circulating about the incident, expressing their desire to shed light on the truth.
The alleged assault occurred on March 2 while the 28-year-old woman and her partner were spending the night in a makeshift tent. Currently back in Spain, the Spanish couple has embarked on an extensive bike trip, visiting 67 countries, which they have now resumed. In the video, they emphasized their intention to “put an end to this unpleasant stage.”
The footage commences with the Spanish couple seeking a secluded spot for overnight camping while traversing Dumka. Despite their efforts to find a secluded location, they find themselves surrounded by locals curious about their journey. The woman alleges that she was raped by seven men, with the video even featuring one of the alleged perpetrators. Subsequently, the video depicts the couple in a hospital, displaying bruises on their faces and hands.
“We decided to record everything, as we didn’t really know what was going to happen. If the police were going to take us seriously, if they were going to send us home, we didn’t know,” a text superimposed on the video reads.
Departing for Spain on March 5, the Spanish couple spoke to the South China Morning Post about the incident, highlighting the complexities of life and the unfortunate reality of such incidents occurring worldwide. The woman cautioned against painting India as uniquely dangerous, citing similar occurrences in other countries.
“My advice to women is to get out of the house, travel and do so without fear. If you are going to camp, it should be in a place not too far from the road where you can easily call for help and have a signal for your phone,” she advised, while affirming their determination to continue their bike adventures.
In India, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the matter is under investigation, with several individuals arrested in connection with the incident, as stated days after the occurrence.
