Lok Sabha elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to kick off the BJP’s Lok Sabha election campaign in Uttar Pradesh starting from Meerut today. Rahul Gandhi hits out at BJP alleging the party of being involved in “match-fixing” to win matches (elections) by putting main players outside the game.

Rahul Gandhi takes ‘match fixing’ jibe at BJP during ‘maha rally’ at Ramlila Maidan, saying that the party can go to any extent to win (elections) by putting main players outside the game.

“Narendra Modi wants that the opposition should not be able to contest elections. Therefore: Appoint your own people in the Election Commission • Two Chief Ministers were put in jail • Congress bank accounts closed • Putting pressure on the judiciary All this so that the match is fixed, the Constitution is cancelled and Narendra Modi remains in power,” he said.

The opposition INDIA bloc had called for a ‘Maharally’ at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan today to protest against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED and the alleged misuse of Central probe agencies against Opposition leaders by the BJP-led Centre.

In an inaugural Lok Sabha election rally in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a familial embrace to the nation, asserting his government’s unwavering commitment to uplifting the aspirations of its citizens. Scheduled for Sunday, the Prime Minister’s rally in Meerut carries significant weight as it marks a pivotal moment in the electoral landscape. Notably, the BJP’s choice of candidate, actor Arun Govil, renowned for his portrayal of Lord Ram in the iconic TV serial ‘Ramayan,’ underscores a strategic move aimed at resonating with the electorate.

Adding to the political spectacle, Rashtriya Lok Dal president Jayant Chaudhary, recently assimilated into the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, is slated to share the platform with the Prime Minister, lending further momentum to the event.

In a post on X in Hindi, PM Modi said, “In the last 10 years, our government, through its work, has given a new flight to the aspirations of my family members across the country. To give further speed to this, the countrymen have once again made up their mind to go with the BJP-NDA in the Lok Sabha elections.” “Will get the privilege of receiving blessings from the public around 3.30 pm today in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

Organized by the Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), the “maha rally” is not focused on protecting one individual, emphasized the Congress on March 30. Instead, the event aims to safeguard the Constitution and democracy.

The Congress highlighted that the rally would demonstrate solidarity among INDIA bloc members and raise concerns such as the misuse of Central agencies by the BJP-led government, rising prices, the highest unemployment rate in 45 years, economic disparities, social polarization, and injustice against farmers.

Several senior leaders of the bloc are expected to participate in the event. Sunita, the wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is scheduled to attend the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday. AAP sources said that she will read out a message from her husband, who is currently in Enforcement Directorate custody due to his involvement in an excise policy-linked case.

PM Modi, a candidate for the third time from the Varanasi constituency, representing the state with the most seats in the lower house, will lead the campaign during campaigning. The BJP has nominated actor Arun Govil, known for his role in the TV serial ‘Ramayan’, as its candidate from Meerut. Joining the Prime Minister on the platform will be Rashtriya Lok Dal president Jayant Chaudhary, who recently joined the BJP-led NDA.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made history by securing 37.36 percent of the total votes, marking the highest vote share achieved by any political party in India since the 1989 election. The BJP won 303 seats individually, contributing to a total of 353 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, secured 52 seats, and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) under its leadership won a total of 98 seats.

The 2019 general elections took place in seven phases, from April 11 to May 19, with results announced on May 23. As campaigning for the upcoming polls has already begun, the BJP aims to secure over 400 seats out of the total 543 in the Lok Sabha.

According to a recent extensive News18 Opinion Poll, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to regain power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a significant majority. The survey predicts the BJP-led NDA to win 411 Lok Sabha seats, surpassing the 400-seat target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the slogan, “Abki baar 400 paar.” The last time a party secured more than 400 seats was in 1984 when the Congress Party won 411 seats out of 542. The projected NDA vote share is anticipated to reach 48% in the upcoming General Elections.

In contrast, the Congress-led I.N.D.I.A. alliance is projected to secure 105 seats, an improvement from the 91 seats it won in the previous iteration as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in 2019. Other smaller parties are expected to win 27 seats, according to the opinion poll.

Within the alliance, the BJP is expected to increase its seat count to 350, while other NDA partners are predicted to contribute 61 seats, according to the poll. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 303 seats, contributing to the NDA’s total of 353.

The Election Commission has revealed that approximately 97 crore Indians will be eligible to vote in this year’s Lok Sabha elections, reflecting a 6 percent increase in registered voters since 2019. The electoral rolls underwent nationwide publication in early February following an intensive Special Summary Revision 2024 process.

Efforts are underway to assess the feasibility of conducting simultaneous elections across India. Several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, are preparing to hold concurrent Lok Sabha and assembly polls. The terms of the Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim Assemblies are set to expire on June 11, June 2, June 24, and June 2 respectively.
