Mark Carney Invites PM Modi To G7 Summit | In what appears to be a thaw in India-Canada diplomatic relations following months of high tension under former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, newly-elected Canadian PM Mark Carney has formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 Summit later this month in Kananaskis, Canada. The summit will take place from June 15 to 17.
In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi confirmed that he had received a phone call from Prime Minister Carney and expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral ties based on mutual respect and shared democratic values.

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” PM Modi wrote.
A Diplomatic Reset After Years of Strain
The invitation comes as a significant gesture, especially considering the frosty relationship between India and Canada in recent years. Ties hit an all-time low under former PM Justin Trudeau, who repeatedly clashed with India on issues including foreign interference and allegations related to separatist groups.
Until now, there had been speculation over whether Canada would extend an invitation to Prime Minister Modi at all — and whether he would accept it. Reports had cited sources close to the Indian establishment saying the Prime Minister may have skipped the summit even if invited, owing to the complex diplomatic terrain.

However, the outreach by PM Carney appears to have set a new tone, prompting a possible reset in Indo-Canadian diplomacy.
What’s at Stake?
This will be the first time Prime Minister Modi and Mark Carney meet in an official capacity since the latter took office. Their interaction could mark the beginning of revived bilateral cooperation, especially in trade, education, technology, and security.
India’s participation in the G7 Summit also reaffirms its position as a vital global stakeholder, especially at a time when the international community is realigning diplomatic equations.
