In northwest Pakistan, a suicide bomber targeted a convoy of Chinese nationals, resulting in the deaths of five persons. According to Mohammad Ali Gandapur, the regional police chief, the attacker drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the convoy as it travelled from Islamabad to their camp in Dasu, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Initially, the Reuters quoted Gandapur claiming five Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver as killed, but latest media updates indicate that six Chinese nationals lost their lives in the attack. The Theorist could not individually confirm the number of deaths.
Dasu, a crucial dam site, had previously experienced a bus blast in 2021, claiming the lives of 13 individuals, including nine Chinese nationals.
Gandapur said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police promptly responded to the incident, initiating relief efforts and ensuring the safety of the remaining convoy members.
This attack occurred shortly after armed assailants targeted a Pakistan naval airbase, resulting in the death of at least one paramilitary soldier. Security forces neutralized all five attackers in retaliatory action.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office expressed relief at averting significant casualties.
The assault on the Turbat base in southwestern Pakistan marks the second attack by ethnic Baloch fighters on a military facility within a week. A Pakistan Navy spokesman confirmed the elimination of all attackers attempting to breach the base, with one paramilitary soldier lost in the exchange.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a prominent separatist group in Balochistan, claimed responsibility for the attack. Known for targeting Pakistani and Chinese interests, the BLA’s actions underscore ongoing security challenges in the region.
In February alone, Pakistan experienced 97 militant incidents, resulting in 87 deaths and 118 injuries, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
