In response to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency. In a statement, the governor expressed gratitude for the courageous efforts of rescue personnel and extended prayers for the safety of all individuals involved.
The Maryland Transportation Authority and US Coast Guard confirmed the incident on the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The collision has led to a mass casualty incident, with numerous vehicles and individuals reportedly in the water. Rescue efforts by the Baltimore fire department are underway to locate at least seven people believed to be in the water following the bridge collapse.
Video footage showed the vessel striking one of the bridge’s central supports, resulting in a significant portion of the 2.6km bridge collapsing into the Patapsco River below. The impact caused the ship to catch fire, with thick, black smoke billowing into the air as part of the bridge collapsed over it.
As a result of the incident, all lanes on I-695 Key Bridge have been closed, with traffic being detoured. The Maryland Transportation Authority described the situation as an “active scene,” attributing the bridge collapse to the ship strike.
