At least 15 people died, and 30 others sustained injuries after a vehicle, believed to be a pickup truck, rammed into a crowd in the French Quarter of New Orleans during New Year’s Day celebrations. Some reports suggest the driver may have also fired at the crowd following the collision.
The tragic incident occurred at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Street, a bustling area renowned for its vibrant nightlife and tourist appeal. Witnesses described the vehicle speeding into the crowd, creating chaos and panic.
New Orleans’ emergency preparedness agency, NOLA Ready, confirmed the severity of the situation on its website, stating, “There has been a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. Thirty injured patients have been transported by NOEMS, and 10 fatalities have been reported. Public safety partners are responding on the scene.”
Police and Emergency Response
Authorities said the driver of the pickup truck appeared to intentionally target the crowd. Reports from witnesses suggest that police engaged the driver with gunfire after the attack, but the driver’s condition has not been confirmed.
