Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to file his nomination from Varanasi for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, marking his bid for a third consecutive term from the constituency. Preceding the nomination filing, PM Modi embarked on a 6-kilometer-long roadshow, where he reiterated promises of furthering the city’s development if re-elected.
Expressing his emotions, PM Modi conveyed, “I am overwhelmed and emotional! I did not even realize how 10 years passed under the shade of your affection. I had said that Maa Ganga had called me. Aaj Maa Ganga ne mujhe god le liya hai (today Maa Ganga has adopted me).” This sentiment encapsulates his deep connection with the city of Varanasi.
Varanasi, a historic constituency, witnessed a significant showdown in 2014 when PM Narendra Modi contested against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, securing a resounding victory with a margin exceeding 3 lakh votes. This victory not only solidified Varanasi’s status as a BJP stronghold but also underscored PM Modi’s personal rapport with the electorate.
The demographics of Varanasi, comprising a majority Hindu population along with significant Muslim and other religious communities, underscore its diverse electoral landscape. With a mix of urban and rural residents, Varanasi presents a microcosm of India’s socio-political fabric.
Reflecting on the neglect under previous administrations, PM Narendra Modi pledged to continue his efforts for the city’s transformation, stating, “During the period of the Congress and INDI alliance, this city of spirituality and faith was always neglected, but we are working day and night with the resolution of building a divine and grand Kashi.”
PM Modi’s nomination filing ceremony is anticipated to be attended by Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, showcasing the party’s solidarity and support for his candidacy. The day’s itinerary includes spiritual visits to Assi Ghat and the Kaal Bhairav Temple, symbolizing PM Modi’s reverence for Varanasi’s cultural heritage.
As the electoral battle heats up, Varanasi prepares for a contest between PM Modi and Congress candidate Ajay Rai, marking a familiar rivalry for the seat. With the elections scheduled for June 1, all eyes are on Varanasi as it once again becomes the epicenter of India’s democratic fervor.
