In a significant move aimed at enhancing governance and development in Ladakh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory. The newly established districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

“The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” Amit Shah stated, emphasizing that these new districts will help bring government services and benefits closer to the people by improving governance across the region.

The decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a “developed and prosperous Ladakh,” according to Mr. Shah. He reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring that the people of Ladakh receive the full benefits of development initiatives, now made more accessible through these administrative changes.

Ladakh was granted Union Territory status in 2019, following the central government’s decision to revoke Article 370, which had previously accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The revocation also led to the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. As a Union Territory, Ladakh is under the direct administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The creation of the new districts is expected to streamline administrative processes, improve public service delivery, and promote equitable development across Ladakh’s diverse and often remote regions.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to hail the move. He wrote, “Creation of five new districts in Ladakh is a step towards better governance and prosperity. Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people. Congratulations to the people there.”
