Kolkata nursing home molestation case: A medical staffer at a Kolkata nursing home was arrested on Saturday for allegedly molesting a semi-conscious female patient, intensifying concerns about the safety of women in healthcare facilities across West Bengal.
The accused, Abdul Subhan, 33, a Group D employee of Ekbalpore Nursing Home in the Ekbalpur area, was taken into custody shortly after the victim’s husband filed a complaint at the Ekbalpur police station. The incident reportedly took place on August 3 at around 11:40 am while the woman was being shifted from the general ward to a dual cabin on the third floor, following her admission for gallbladder stone surgery.
According to the complaint, the hospital employee allegedly kissed the woman on the lips while she was in a semi-conscious state and alone in the cabin. The victim informed her husband about the incident, who immediately approached the authorities.

The police registered a case under Section 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the hospital reportedly supported the allegations. Subhan was arrested from the hospital premises at around 2:25 pm the same day. He was later produced in court and remanded to judicial custody until August 7.

Following the arrest, Ekbalpore Nursing Home terminated Subhan’s services. In a termination notice, the hospital stated: “The reason for this termination is your disrespectful behaviour towards our patient on August 3, 2025. Our company values respect and professionalism in the workplace, and your actions have fallen short of these expectations.”
This incident comes amid a series of troubling reports from healthcare institutions across West Bengal. In the past year, the state has witnessed multiple cases involving allegations of harassment, molestation, and even murder within hospital premises.
Among the most serious was the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in August last year, followed by the alleged molestation of a 13-year-old girl by a lab technician in Howrah, and a 26-year-old woman allegedly being assaulted while sleeping at a government hospital in Kolkata.
The latest case has once again sparked calls for stringent safety protocols, better staff screening, and comprehensive measures to protect patients—especially women—within both public and private healthcare systems in the state. Authorities confirmed that further investigation is ongoing.
