Kolkata: Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court announced his decision to step down from the judiciary and venture into politics. In an interview with Bengali news channel ABP Ananda, he said that he had been encouraged by leaders of the ruling party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), to engage in political battles, prompting his decision to make the shift.
Reflecting on his tenure marked by courtroom dramas, including scuffles, boycotts, and disputes among lawyers and colleagues, Justice Gangopadhyay expressed his readiness to contest elections if offered a ticket, without specifying his political affiliation. He revealed that his resignation letter would be submitted to the President on Tuesday, with Monday marking his final day at the Calcutta High Court.
Criticizing the prevailing corruption in West Bengal under the TMC regime, Justice Gangopadhyay lamented his inability to connect with the common people from the confines of the courtroom.

Determined to make a difference, he emphasized his commitment to addressing societal issues, stating his resignation as a means to take on new challenges.
In response to his decision, TMC’s state spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya said labelled him a “political party worker”, whereas the state BJP president welcomed his move towards politics, indicating BJP as a potential fit for Gangopadhyay’s inclinations.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury extended an open invitation to Gangopadhyay to join the Congress, highlighting his anti-corruption stance and fighting spirit, while expressing reservations if he aligns with the BJP due to ideological differences. Chowdhury had previously endorsed Gangopadhyay as a potential chief ministerial candidate for West Bengal.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its initial roster of candidates for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha election. Alongside maintaining the presence of seasoned politicians, the BJP has also brought forth new personalities. Notably, the list includes individuals acknowledged not only for their political affiliations but also for their significant contributions across various domains.
