Author J.K. Rowling has once again found herself at the centre of a heated debate, reigniting a dispute with Harry Potter stars Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe concerning transgender identity and rights.
In her latest remarks, the writer criticised “celebs” who, she claimed, had used their influence to support the transitioning of minors. This rebuke comes after both Radcliffe and Watson, along with other cast members, had previously spoken out against Rowling’s stance on gender identity in 2020.
The BBC in a report said it reached out to Radcliffe and Watson for their reactions to Rowling’s recent comments.
JK Rowling also welcomed a review that raised concerns about gender identity services for those under 18. The Cass Review, released on Wednesday, highlighted issues with the evidence supporting medical intervention in gender care for children, prompting Rowling to describe it as “a watershed moment”.
You’ve asked me several questions on this thread and accused me of avoiding answering, so here goes.
I believe a woman is a human being who belongs to the sex class that produces large gametes. It’s irrelevant whether or not her gametes have ever been fertilised, whether or not… pic.twitter.com/X6mbdJ0YVm

Responding to a social media user’s anticipation of public apologies from Radcliffe and Watson, JK Rowling stated that such forgiveness was not guaranteed. She reiterated her concerns about celebrities aligning with movements that she believes threaten women’s rights and advocate for the transitioning of minors.
JK Rowling has faced accusations of transphobia for her views on gender identity, including her assertion that trans women should not have access to female-only spaces. Recently, she challenged the police in Scotland, where she resides, to arrest her under a new hate crime law after referring to several trans women as men. However, Police Scotland opted not to take action.
Despite the criticism leveled against her, JK Rowling maintains both support for her position and dismissal of backlash over her opinions. She has repeatedly denied being transphobic, emphasising her respect for the rights of transgender individuals to live authentically and without discrimination.
Radcliffe, known for his portrayal of the young wizard in the Harry Potter films, responded to Rowling’s earlier comments in 2020 by emphasising the need for greater support for transgender and nonbinary people. Similarly, Watson affirmed the validity of trans identities and the right to live without constant scrutiny or denial.
Several other cast members, including Eddie Redmayne and Rupert Grint, have voiced support for the transgender community and disagreement with Rowling’s views. However, Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed the infamous Potter villain Lord Voldemort, defended JK Rowling against the abuse she has faced, labeling it “disgusting” and “appalling”.
Eddie Izzard and Helena Bonham Carter, among others, have also defended JK Rowling, arguing that her opinions reflect her own experiences of abuse, rather than transphobia.
JK Rowling has attributed her outspokenness on transgender issues in part to her personal history of domestic abuse and sexual assault.
