A devastating fire erupted at a nightclub located in central Istanbul during daytime renovation works, resulting in the tragic death of at least 29 persons and leaving one person injured, said the office of the city’s governor.
Governor Davut Gul’s office released a statement, quoted by Al Jazeera, confirming the grim toll, and said, “The number of people who lost their lives in the fire … has increased to 29.” The injured individual is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
The fire originated on the ground floor of a 16-storey building situated in the residential Gayrettepe district of Istanbul. Television footage captured the horrifying scene as flames engulfed the structure, accompanied by billowing plumes of thick smoke emanating from upper storey windows.
Emergency responders were swiftly dispatched to the scene, with the fire being brought under control several hours after it erupted, as per the governor’s office. An investigation into the cause of the blaze has been initiated, and arrest warrants have been issued for five individuals, including the club management and those responsible for the renovation work.
Throughout the afternoon, a significant presence of fire trucks and ambulances remained at the site, underscoring the scale of the tragedy. Al Jazeera, which had its correspondent on ground, reported that the nightclub was closed for repairs during Ramadan in preparation for the upcoming Eid holiday.
The Masquerade nightclub, as indicated on its website, had temporarily shut down for renovation from March 10 to April 10. Capable of accommodating up to 4,000 patrons, the venue is known for its DJ performances and stage shows.
In response to the incident, Istanbul authorities took precautionary measures by cutting off power, water, and gas to the area and evacuating building residents. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of this devastating fire.
