New Delhi: Sources in the Congress said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will make her electoral debut from the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh while her brother and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi will try to return in Amethi.
Raebareli, a Congress stronghold, has been represented by Sonia Gandhi in the past. Meanwhile Amethi, also a Congress bastion, was lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
According to media reports, Rahul Gandhi will also contest from his current constituency of Wayanad in Kerala, where his victory allowed him to maintain his status as a member of the Lok Sabha after the previous general election.
Priyanka Gandhi’s decision to enter electoral politics, long anticipated, follows her mother Sonia Gandhi’s announcement that she will not seek re-election from Raebareli, a seat she has won five times, including in 2019, making her the only Congress leader to secure a Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.
Recently, Sonia Gandhi was elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
The development came barely a few days after the senior Congress leader penned an open letter to the people of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh to thank them for their support to her.
In her message to the people of Raebareli in Hindi, she had said, “I am pleased to acknowledge that my current standing is owed to your support, and I have consistently endeavored to uphold your trust. However, due to health and age concerns, I have decided not to run in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.”
“With this resolution, I understand that I won’t have the chance to directly serve you further, yet my dedication and commitment will forever be with you. I trust in your continued support for me and my family in the times ahead, just as you have steadfastly stood by us in the past,” wrote Sonia Gandhi.
