The announcement drew ire of opposition parties. Opposition leaders lashed out at the Modi government for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and questioned the timing of the decision which has come ahead of the Lok Sabha elections due in April-May.
“It has taken four years and three months for the Modi Government to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed by the Parliament in December 2019. The Prime Minister claims that his Government works in a business-like and time-bound manner. The time taken to notify the rules for the CAA is yet another demonstration of the Prime Minister’s blatant lies,” Jairam Ramesh, the communication head of the Congress, posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was a central component of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Following the BJP government’s ascension to power, the Parliament passed the act on December 11, 2019.

Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee appealed to people to ‘be calm and avoid rumours.’
“You should have notified rules six months ago. If there are any good things, we always support and appreciate but if anything is done that is not good for the country, TMC will always raise its voice and oppose it. I know why today’s date was chosen before Ramazan,” she said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had recently said that the CAA would be notified and implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. “CAA is an Act of the country, it will be definitely be notified. It will be notified before the polls, he had said.
On the CAA notification, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan says, “This is the first step of converting this country into a Hindutva country, which is against the Constitution. This govt is known for its violation of all sections of the Constitution…”
DMK MP Tiruchi N Siva says “Today, they have notified along with the rules. The surprise is that this bill was passed in Parliament in 2019, though it appears to be very generous in giving citizenship to those who are persecuted by other nations but it is totally partial by way of leaving Muslims from that list. In the Parliament, I opposed it and on behalf of DMK, I gave an amendment…”
