New Delhi: Renowned Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, celebrated for his timeless melodies like ‘Chitthi aayi hai’, passed away in Mumbai on Monday following a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his family. He was 72 years old.
Born in Jetpur, Gujarat, on May 17, 1951, Udhas initially trained in tabla before delving into Hindustani classical vocal music under the guidance of notable mentors such as Ghulam Qadir Khan Sahab and Navrang Nagpurkar of the Gwalior Gharana.
“With profound sorrow, we regret to announce the passing of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February after a prolonged illness,” stated the Udhas family.
Udhas, recognised for his contributions as a playback singer in Hindi cinema with hits in movies like ‘Naam’, ‘Saajan’, and ‘Mohra’, breathed his last around 11 am at Breach Candy Hospital, according to a source close to the family quoted by a news agency.
His repertoire includes timeless ghazals like ;Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera’, ‘Ghungroo Toot Gaye’, ‘Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein’, ‘Ek Taraf Uska Ghar’, and ‘Karvaten Badal Badal’.

Apart from his film career, Pankaj Udhas hosted the talent hunt TV show ‘Aadab Aarz Hai’, and enthralled audiences globally with his live concerts and numerous albums.
Following the news of his demise, tributes poured in, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing, “We mourn the loss of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed a range of emotions and whose Ghazals spoke directly to the soul.”
“His departure leaves a void in the music world that can never be filled. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” added the Prime Minister.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended condolences, acknowledging Udhas’ profound impact on listeners of all demographics through his songs and ghazals.
Udhas gained prominence with his soulful rendition in Mahesh Bhatt’s 1986 film ‘Naam’, and his hit track ‘Chitthi Aayee Hai’ was recognized among the 100 songs of the millennium by BBC Radio.
Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam reminisced about Udhas’ influence on his childhood, while musician Anup Jalota expressed shock at the loss, sharing memories and condolences.
