New Delhi: A day after the announcement of dissolution of the national assembly by the Pakistan President, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday proposed ex-chief justice Giulzar Ahmed as caretaker PM. Ahmed, 27th chief justice of the country, was in office from December 2019 till February 2022.

The move to this effect was announced by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. “In response to the President’s letter, after consultation and approval from the PTI Corps Committee, Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed for the post of caretaker Prime Minister,” PTI twitted.

The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing by a day over rejection of the no-trust motion against Imran Khan and the subsequent dissolution of the National Assembly by the President.

On Sunday, Pakistan President Arif Alvi announced fresh polls after dissolving the national assembly on recommendation of Prime Minister Irman Khan. The development came after last minute dismissal of a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition parties against the Pakistan PM.  Dismissing the no-trust motion, Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri said that it is against the Constitution and rules of the nation.

Khan, while addressing people of Pakistan, had said to get ready for elections. He alleged a larger conspiracy to topple down his government. His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) later tweeted (in Urdu), “Today, by making #External_constitution_failed Pakistan has proved that this country will make its own decisions and this nation will live on its own. God willing.”

The Pakistan PM, on Saturday, had said that he has a plan for and people need not worry about. He had claimed to defeat united opposition during the no-trust motion.

Opposition leaders, however, had cried foul play by the ruling government and termed the rejection of the motion unconstitutional. The opposition leaders announced to intensify their protest against the Imran Khan-led government. They also announced to move the Supreme Court without making a delay.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), had tweeted, “Government has violated the constitution. did not allow voting on no confidence motion. The united opposition is not leaving parliament. Our lawyers are on their way to the Supreme Court. We call on ALL institutions to protect, uphold, defend & implement the constitution of Pakistan.”
