“The BJP is trying to capture the country and if everyone fights the elections together, then the picture will be different. We are talking to all,” he told the media.
New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is currently in Delhi meeting Opposition leaders, on Wednesday said he will not be the leader but will “try to unite”. Kumar was responding to questions on whether he sees himself as the next Prime Minister of India.
“The BJP is trying to capture the country and if everyone fights the elections together, then the picture will be different. We are talking to all,” he told the media.
On Wednesday, Kumar met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar in the national capital. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Kumar said, “We will build a main front, not a Third Front.” Kumar also exuded confidence that his talks with the Opposition leaders will be positive.
Reiterating that he has no personal choice, Kumar says he wishes all Opposition leaders meet and choose a leader. A close aide of Kumar said the chief minister is trying to explain all Opposition leaders the need to put up a united fight against the BJP.
However, the nearest to what Kumar envisions was seen when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tried to bring all Opposition parties on one platform to choose a candidate for the Presidential election. Although the leaders chose Yashwant Sinha, he could not win the election.
It is also important to note that till now there is no consensus on who will become the Opposition face against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several big names, including Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal, have come up but a decision is yet to be taken.
