Harjeet Singh Laddi, a Canada-based Khalistani terrorist and a most-wanted fugitive on the radar of India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), has claimed responsibility for the recent firing at Kap’s Café, a Surrey-based restaurant reportedly associated with Indian comedian Kapil Sharma.
The incident occurred late on July 9 when unidentified gunmen opened fire outside the café located in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey, British Columbia. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the attack has sent shockwaves across communities in both India and Canada.
Laddi is affiliated with the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), known for its pro-Khalistan agenda and violent tactics. He has long been under surveillance for his alleged involvement in extremist operations and is currently one of the NIA’s most-wanted individuals. The agency has offered a ₹10 lakh reward for information leading to his arrest.
Controversy Behind the Attack and Ongoing Investigation
Sources suggest that the firing may have been triggered by an old episode of The Kapil Sharma Show, where a comedic sketch allegedly mocked the attire and conduct of Nihang Singhs—a traditional Sikh warrior order. The skit was criticised for “ridiculing Sikh spiritual traditions and dignity.”

A statement allegedly issued by the group accused Kapil Sharma of hurting religious sentiments, adding: “This is a mockery of Sikh spiritual traditions and the dignity of Nihang Singhs. No religion or spiritual identity should be ridiculed in the name of comedy.” The group also claimed to have tried contacting Kapil Sharma’s manager multiple times without receiving a response, further fueling their grievances.
Canadian journalist Sameer Kaushal reported that around 12 bullets were fired at the café, and shared a video on social media showing bullet holes on the property’s glass windows.
The Surrey Police Service confirmed the incident in a public statement:
“On Thursday, July 10, at 1:50 am, Surrey Police Service was called to a business located in the 8400 block of 120 Street for a report of shots fired. Upon police arrival, it was quickly determined that the shots were fired towards the business, damaging the property, while staff members were still present inside.”
The police added that investigators have collected evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage. No suspect details have been released so far.
Meanwhile, Harjeet Singh Laddi is also the main accused in the June 2024 assassination of VHP leader Vikas Prabhakar in Punjab’s Nangal region. Investigations linked him to a larger conspiracy alongside fellow Khalistani operative Kulbir Singh alias Sidhu.
