Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that the chatbot Grok from artificial intelligence startup xAI will now be accessible to all premium subscribers of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The announcement was made via a post on X, with Musk refraining from providing further details. Previously, Grok was exclusively available to Premium+ subscribers. With an increasing number of advertisers shifting away from the microblogging platform, Musk has emphasized the need to reduce the company’s dependence on advertising revenue, instead focusing on more appealing subscription models.

Earlier this month, Musk revealed plans for xAI to open-source Grok, following a lawsuit against OpenAI over allegations of deviating from its original mission in favor of a profit-driven approach. This decision could potentially grant the public free access to experiment with the underlying code of the technology, bringing xAI in line with companies like Meta and France’s Mistral, both of which have adopted open-source AI models.
Bringing AI Conversations to Life
Grok, developed by xAI, is an innovative AI chatbot designed to engage users in conversations and generate text responses akin to ChatGPT and similar tools. However, Grok stands out due to its unique capability to access real-time information through X (formerly Twitter) and its penchant for delivering witty and “rebellious” answers to edgy questions.
Key Features and Development
Released in November 2023, Grok is now accessible to Premium+ subscribers of the X platform.
Powered by Grok-1, a large language model (LLM), it was trained using a custom tech stack featuring Kubernetes, JAX, and Rust, ensuring faster and more efficient development compared to other chatbots.
Grok-1 underwent extensive training on diverse internet text data sources, including Wikipedia articles and scientific papers. Its distinguishing feature lies in its direct access to real-time X posts, providing it with unparalleled current knowledge.
Interaction Styles and Modes
Grok offers two interaction modes: “Fun Mode” and “Regular Mode.” “Fun Mode” adopts an edgy and humorous persona, while “Regular Mode” prioritizes accuracy. While Grok’s name originates from Robert A. Heinlein’s novel “Stranger in a Strange Land,” its deeper significance aligns with xAI’s vision of assisting humanity in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
Versatility and Applications. Grok’s capabilities extend beyond casual conversation, including drafting emails, debugging code, and generating ideas, all in fluent, human-like language. Unlike conventional chatbots, Grok tackles taboo or challenging questions with ease, showcasing its readiness to engage in diverse topics.
Comparison with ChatGPT
Grok and ChatGPT share a common goal of enabling human-like interactions through AI but differ in several aspects, including access to real-time information, political correctness, and pricing models.
Future Enhancements
While Grok currently focuses on text inputs, future iterations will incorporate visual and audio capabilities, promising an even more immersive user experience. Grok represents a significant advancement in AI chatbot technology, revolutionizing the way users interact and engage in conversations online.
