China has improved its ability to secretly spread false information and may attempt to influence the 2024 US presidential election, according to a report from the US intelligence community.

The report highlights China’s efforts to expand its global covert influence, aiming to sow doubt about US leadership, undermine democratic processes, and extend its global influence. It also identifies Russia, Iran, and other non-state actors as challenges to international norms and US dominance.T

The report underscores concern about China’s support for Russia during the conflict in Ukraine and warns of the China ability to use technology to interfere in US elections. The Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, has called for increased military assistance to Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of US support in maintaining territorial gains against Russia.

Additionally, the report highlights increasing trade between China and Russia, along with a rise in Chinese exports of goods with military applications since 2022.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, has yet to schedule a vote on a bill that would allocate an additional $60 billion for Ukraine, despite the measure passing in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Similar to Avril Haines, Director of National Intelligence, CIA Director William Burns emphasized that continued assistance to Ukraine would convey a message to China regarding its aggressive actions toward Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Haines expressed concerns about the potential global ramifications of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, highlighting how regional developments could have broader implications.

She also mentioned the attacks on shipping by Houthi militias and noted that militant groups like al Qaeda and ISIS, influenced by Hamas, have urged their followers to carry out assaults against Israeli and American interests.

During the hearing, a protester interrupted with calls to safeguard civilians in Gaza, prompting questions directed at Burns regarding the situation of children in the Palestinian enclave.

Emotions ran high during the session as some senators deliberated on immigration along the US-Mexico border, a focal point of Trump’s campaign against Democratic President Joe Biden in the November election.

FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed apprehension about potential terrorist threats arising from vulnerabilities at the border, citing an increase in threats from individuals inspired by Islamist groups and other foreign militants following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.
