In a groundbreaking move, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is set to play a pivotal role in the future of urban air mobility as Sarla Aviation teams up with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to introduce electric flying taxis. This initiative will focus on sustainable air travel using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, aimed at reducing congestion and offering faster, cleaner alternatives to traditional transportation methods.
Revolutionizing Air Mobility with Electric Flying Taxis
Sarla Aviation, co-founded by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, is spearheading this transformation in Karnataka by planning to introduce seven-seater electric flying taxis.
These advanced aircraft promise a significant reduction in travel time and environmental impact, offering a quieter, cleaner, and more cost-effective alternative to traditional helicopters.
The partnership with BIAL marks a significant step towards launching this service, although the flying taxis are expected to become operational in the next two to three years.

Once fully implemented, passengers can look forward to travel times as short as 19 minutes from Kempegowda International Airport to Electronics City, a route that currently takes around 152 minutes by road. Fares are expected to be competitive, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,700 for this journey.
Sarla Aviation’s Vision for Urban Air Transport
Sarla Aviation is focused on making air travel more accessible in some of India’s most congested cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune. According to Adrian Schmidt, the company’s co-founder and CEO, their goal is to “redefine urban air transport with operational efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and scalable infrastructure.” The company’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency aligns with global standards for greener aviation.
The introduction of eVTOL aircraft at Bengaluru Airport is expected to address the city’s chronic traffic problems by offering faster, sustainable alternatives to ground transportation. The electric flying taxis are not only a solution for congestion but also part of a broader vision to advance urban mobility.
Addressing Challenges in Sustainable Air Mobility
While the vision is promising, regulatory challenges remain a hurdle that needs to be overcome before the service can be fully operational. However, the collaboration between Sarla Aviation and BIAL signifies a major leap forward in tackling urban congestion through sustainable aviation technology.
Sarla Aviation is rapidly emerging as a leader in the advanced air mobility sector, particularly with its focus on cleaner, more efficient aerial solutions. The company’s founders bring a wealth of experience from their previous work with Western air traffic startups — Chauhan at Joby, and Gaonkar and Schmidt at Lilium.
A Greener Future for Urban Transportation
The electric flying taxi initiative at Kempegowda International Airport marks a key step in advancing urban mobility in India, particularly in cities struggling with severe traffic congestion. As Sarla Aviation continues to drive innovation in the sector, this collaboration represents a promising future for affordable, sustainable air travel, positioning the company as a frontrunner in the rapidly evolving landscape of urban air mobility.
