7-month-old baby survives fall from Chennai apartment’s fourth floor

A seven-month-old baby was saved in a dramatic video that went viral after she fell from the fourth storey of an apartment in Chennai and got stuck on the roof of what seems to be a portico.

In the two-minute and twenty-second clip, neighbors in Thirumullaivoyal, near Avadi, are seen assembling to save the infant who is hanging over the edge of the tin sheet on the second level of the apartment building.

As a man climbs to the first-floor balcony from the window, someone can be seen spreading a bed sheet to save the infant from falling. The video was shot from the balcony of the opposite building.

The baby may be seen getting closer to the roof’s edge while the rescue effort is ongoing. Then, as residents can be heard shouting, a second man scales the balcony railing and attempts to catch the baby. The man straightens up, reaches out, picks up the infant, and hands her off to someone inside the apartment. The girl was taken to a hospital after sustaining minor injuries to her arm and leg, according to reports.

After almost a million people watched the event footage on social media, many were curious about how the toddler fell from the fourth floor.

Reacting to the video, a user commented, “Question, how in the hell did the kid end up over there? Where are the parents? watching web series maybe.”

Another user said, “From what I could gather from this thread looks like the baby slipped out of mother’s hand from one of the upper floor balconies onto this shed structure. This is why it is so important to have safety grill & nets installed on balconies in all apartments. Miracle that kid is ok.”

“Thankfully it ended well. Hopefully, they will block the way through which baby reached there,” a third user wrote.

Earlier, in December 2023, a three-year-old boy died after falling from an apartment building in Chennai’s Navalur on the eighth story.
