Jammu: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday promises reservation in education and jobs as Scheduled Tribe (ST) for Pahari community. Shah made announcement during his rally at Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. The move is being considered as a pre-poll promise aimed at widening the BJP’s support base. To implement the decision, government will have to amend the Reservations Act in Parliament for it and it will be the first instance of a linguistic group earning reservation in the country.
Amit Shah said that the GD Sharma commission set up by the government has sent the report and recommended reservation for Gujjar, Bakarwal and Pahari communities. It will be given soon. “He claimed such reservation became possible only after the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 was struck down. Now, minorities, Dalits, tribals, Paharis here will get their rights,” he added.
As per the data, 55 per cent of total six lakh Pahari population are Hindu people while rest are Muslim people in Jammu and Kashmir. He cleared that existing STs will not lose anything”. “Few people have been trying to instigate Gujjars and Bakerwals, but the people saw through their designs,” he said.
“In Jammu and Kashmir, the earlier governments considered the power to be the fiefdom of their family, while the central government under the leadership of Narendra Modi started a new era of development here by establishing democracy up to the panchayat level,” said Shah while addressing the rally.
He also inaugurated development works of 82 tribal villages under PMAAGY in Rajouri district and laid foundation stone for various projects related to health and education. “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Rajouri for this immense love and immense support,” added Shah.

Shah added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken out Jamhooriyat from three families in Jammu and Kashmir and has taken it to the people through 30 thousand Panchayati members. “In the 70 years of independence, only Rs 15000 crore had been invested in Jammu and Kashmir, but since 2019, an investment of about Rs 56000 crore has come,” he said.
The Union Home Minister said that Earlier the delimitation was for the benefit of only three families. For the first time after independence, now there has been a real delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir, due to which the people of the hilly region have got their rights.
