Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday evening, causing widespread destruction across several regions, damaging infrastructure, and triggering emergency rescue operations.
The twin tremors, measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, were among the strongest recorded in the country in more than a century and were felt across a large part of northern South America.

Government Launches Emergency Response
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the nation shortly after the earthquakes, confirming that multiple states had suffered damage. Authorities immediately launched emergency assessments and rescue efforts.
President Rodríguez urged citizens to remain calm as emergency teams worked in affected areas. “We urge our population to remain calm. We urge unity,” she said during her televised remarks.

One of the country’s most important transport facilities, Simón Bolívar International Airport, sustained significant damage during the earthquakes. According to government officials, airport operations have been temporarily suspended while inspections and repairs are carried out.

Panic in Caracas as Buildings Shake
Residents of the capital city, Caracas, rushed out of homes, offices, and apartment buildings as the strong tremors shook the city. Several structures suffered visible damage, with some walls collapsing and exposing building interiors.
Witnesses reported seeing dust clouds rising above parts of the capital, particularly in commercial districts that are typically busy during evening hours.
The impact of the earthquakes extended beyond Venezuela. Reports indicated that shaking was felt in neighbouring countries, including parts of Brazil’s Amazon region, located approximately 1,700 kilometres from Caracas.
Authorities in affected areas outside Venezuela also monitored the situation as residents evacuated buildings during the tremors.
India extends hand
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the people of Venezuela on Thursday following the devastating earthquakes. He conveyed sympathy to the families of those affected and stated that India stands ready to provide assistance if required.
